The SCE campuses will be closed, and no classes will be held, in honor of the Thanksgiving Holiday: Thursday, November 25 – Sunday, November 28, 2010. Offices will open and classes will resume as regularly scheduled on Monday, November 29, 2010.

Online Registration Remains Open

Although SCE campuses will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday, online registration remains open 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Visit myGateway at http://mygateway.nocccd.edu to log into your student account. Registration will remain open until the class is full or until the day before a class begins.

Please note that the SCE Offices will be closed on Friday, November 12-Sunday, November 14 in honor of the Veteran’s Day Holiday.

Online registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9 for CTE registration and Wednesday, November 10 for SCE registration. Computers for online registration are available on Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 10 at the SCE registration offices at the following times:

• Anaheim Campus and SCE Wilshire Center at 7:00 a.m.
• SCE Cypress Center at 7:30 a.m.

A clock symbol has been placed in the class schedule once again to indicate the CTE courses that are eligible for registration on Tuesday, November 9 at 7:00 a.m.

TERM DATES
The SCE Winter 2010-2011 Term starts the week of December 6, 2010 and ends March 20, 2011.

ONLINE REGISTRATION WORKSHOPS/TUTORIAL Workshops are available to provide students with tips, checklists and information for a successful online registration experience. All students are welcome to attend. All workshops will be held at the Anaheim Campus in room 606 at the following dates/times:

At 10:21 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2010, all three NOCCCD schools, including Cypress College, Fullerton College and the School of Continuing Education (SCE), will participate in a regional earthquake drill called “The Great Shakeout.” In an effort to better prepare for an actual earthquake in an after-business hours situation, while classes may be taking place, the NOCCCD’s Anaheim Campus will also hold an evening drill on October 28, 2010.

The two primary goals for the drill are to practice the duck, cover and hold exercise and to safely evacuate the building. All faculty members will evacuate their classes to their designated campus areas.

Please follow these key steps during the earthquake drill on October 21, 2010 at 10:21 a.m. or at the on the evening of October 28, 2010 at the Anaheim Campus:

Earthquake Safety Procedures: Duck, Cover and Hold, then Evacuate

• Duck - Immediately duck down close to the floor and take cover.
• Cover - Take cover under a table, desk, other sturdy furniture, or stay close to an interior wall and cover your head, neck with your arms.
• Hold - If you are under something, hold on to it and be prepared to move with it. Once the shaking stops, hang up any telephone receivers that were knocked off during the earthquake.
• Evacuate - Evacuate using the nearest exit and assemble in your campus’ west parking lot (follow our AC evacuation procedures).

According to the website, www.shakeout.org, the safest place during an earthquake is to duck under a sturdy surface – this is safer than running to a doorway for protective cover. If the doorway is your only option, drop down to the floor and brace yourself so your back is to the doorjamb, where the door is hinged to the frame.

The website also states that if you are outside, move away from buildings, overhead electrical wires, poles, signs and trees. If you are in your vehicle, stop. If possible, stay away from overhead power lines, and stay in your vehicle.

This third annual drill was first held in November 2008. Many schools, government offices and local workplaces will participate in this drill for 2010.

The School of Continuing Education is pleased to offer five scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year. SCE provides scholarships for new and current students to continue in their educational career. These scholarships vary in their fields, the requirements to apply for them, and the amount. Each scholarship has been made available through the generosity of individual donors, faculty and staff, and retired administrators. Please pay careful attention to the requirements for each of the scholarships. Awards range from $100 to $500.

Deadline and Submission Locations

The deadline to submit the completed application and essay is Friday, April 8, 2011; students should submit them based on their program of study to the following locations:

• Basic Skills/High School Diploma students must submit their completed application packets to their campus High School Diploma Lab instructors
• CTE students must submit their completed applications to the CTE Office-Anaheim Campus, Room 513
• ESL students must submit their completed applications to their campus ESL Learning Center/Lab staff

Scholarship Essay Writing Assistance
The Learning Center lead faculty at Anaheim, Cypress, and Wilshire will provide one-on-one and/or small group assistance with essay writing to students applying for scholarships. Students may visit their campus Learning Center directly. The Centers are open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
