Get Ready to ShakeOut at the State's Largest Earthquake Drill

Great ShakeOutAt 10:18 a.m. on October 18, 2012, the SCE campuses along with millions of other Californians will participate in the The Great ShakeOut - the largest earthquake drill ever!

Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you work, live or travel in California.  The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and be prepared.  The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophe for you, our campus, or our surrounding community.

Why is a “drop, cover and hold on” drill important?  As with anything, to act quickly you must practice.  You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.  More than nine million participants are expected to participate in the Great ShakeOut this year.  SCE staff, faculty, and students are expected to participate if  they are on any of the three campuses during the drill. The goal is for everyone to practice the “drop, cover and hold on” exercise and then, when instructed, evacuate the campus buildings to the designated safe zones.

We look forward to a successful drill on Thursday, October 18; visit for further information.  Featured on the website is a page, “Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety,” that includes checklists and resource sheets on securing household items, creating an earthquake kit, assessing your home for structural integrity, and developing a family emergency plan.
