Dr. Doffoney’s Memo and Addendum

Ned Doffoney

As this year school year comes to an end Chancellor, Dr. Ned Doffoney took a minute to reflect on the accomplishments that have been made and what’s to come. In a memo Dr. Doffoney released May 20th, he states that this year has been a year full of memories, and one that he will remember forever.

Much was accomplished this past year in the NOCCCD. Christine Terry was named the new Provost of the School of Continuing Education (SCE), the SCE Wilshire Center was opened, and The new Student/Center/Bookstore and Gateway Plaza at Cypress College was opened just to name a few.

As Dr. Doffoney finishes his first year as Chancellor he does want to remind every one of the obstacles that do lie ahead of us as he explained in his addendum. A couple of weeks ago Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a proposal of budget cuts to ease the money crisis in the state of California. Doffoney states, “We weathered the budget storm earlier this year, as noted in my memos to you during the past several months. That metaphor no longer stands, however. Many things are different now.” But as things may begin to change Dr. Doffoney does not want you to forget all the wonderful things that have been achieved this past year. As Dr. Doffoney stated in the May 20th memo, “The time to focus on our growing budget problem will come soon enough.”

Over 100 SCE Students Attend "SCE Goes to College" Event

Over 100 SCE students attended the “SCE Goes to College” event last Thursday at the Wilshire Center. Several representatives from Fullerton College presented information about their programs and services to a packed crowd in the Wilshire High School Lab. Hosted by the Adult College and Career Transitions (ACCT) program, the event aimed to provide first-hand access to information and personnel to guide SCE students in making this transition from noncredit to credit.

With research showing that students need more support in transferring, ACCT worked with Fullerton College to connect the lines for many SCE students and focused on providing information on support services such as financial aid, academic support, guidance and counseling. Many students enjoyed asking one-on-one questions with the representatives after the presentations out in the Wilshire Courtyard and several won the opportunity drawing prizes! Thank you to the following for making this such a successful event for SCE students: Rolando Sanabria, Fullerton College Outreach Counselor, Mary Foster, SCE Special Projects Coordinator-ACCT and George Dooley and Juanita Giampiccolo, SCE Counselors.

Swine Flu Outbreak: Be Cautious & Be Prepared

Ned Doffoney

The Swine Flu outbreak has been identified as a federal public health emergency that, in the words of our President, is “cause for concern” but “not a cause for alarm.” Please treat this situation with the balanced seriousness it requires. Be cautious and be prepared.

To help you be cautious, tips from our campus Health Centers for reducing your risk of illness are re-printed here. Mary Lou Giska, FNP, Cypress College Director of Health Services, reported that our local health department has asked us to be on the lookout for people with fever and cough or sore throat. These people should be advised to contact a primary care provider or campus Health Services for evaluation. This is important as influenza is thought to spread through coughing and sneezing of ill people. Ms. Giska also advises us that “the best” thing we can do to avoid transmission is to wash our hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water. (Thirty seconds is about how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday.”)
