Student Success Profiles
English as a Second Language Advanced Level Graduate
At 33 years old, Elsa moved from Peru to the United States with her three children. As a single mother, she struggled to balance work, learning English, studying for nursing school, and caring for her children all at the same time. Nonetheless, Elsa persevered, completing nursing school and earning her Certified Nursing Assistant certification. She worked double shifts from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. and studied English whenever she had a free moment. She enhanced her English by watching cartoons and reading books to her children while also practicing her English speaking to her patients. In 2007, Elsa earned her high school diploma. Since then she has become fluent in spoken English and excels at writing. Above all of her accomplishments, Elsa learned that the love she has for her family is what motivated her to make the best of her hardships. In turn, her children work to make her proud, pursuing their education at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of California, San Diego. Elsa looks forward to continuing her education to study pharmacology.
